PGT-A: when genetic testing of embryos helps
PGT-A screens embryos for chromosome numbers before transfer. It is most useful after repeated miscarriage, failed cycles or at an advanced maternal age.
PGT-A (preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy) checks whether a blastocyst has the normal number of chromosomes. A few cells are biopsied on day five or six, and the embryo is frozen while results are awaited.
It is most helpful for advanced maternal age, two or more miscarriages, repeated implantation failure, or when several embryos are available and you want to transfer the strongest one first.
PGT-A does not create better embryos — it selects among the ones you already have, which is why a good number of blastocysts matters.
We recommend it selectively, only where the evidence suggests it will improve your outcome, and always after explaining the added cost.
